Richmond Law Magazine recently highlighted Emma Silverman for her work in the Intellectual Property and Transactional Law (IPT) Clinic.

The IPT Clinic partners with local entrepreneurs, nonprofits, and small businesses to provide free support on matters such as business formation, trademark and copyright registration, and contract drafting. As a teaching law firm, it gives law students the opportunity to work directly with clients under faculty supervision, helping them develop practical skills while offering valuable services to those who may not otherwise be able to afford legal counsel.

Emma joined the IPT Clinic during her second year of law school and participated for three consecutive semesters, gaining hands-on experience by working directly with clients on business formation, trademark and copyright registration, and contract drafting. She emphasized the value of leading her own client projects: “The unique thing about the clinic is that you are in charge of your own project and have face-to-face time with clients right off the bat,” Emma shared.

One of her most meaningful projects involved assisting her cousin, Zach Norris, and his wife, Hannah, owners of The Grass Spot, a small creative business specializing in design and media services. With Emma’s guidance, the couple received crucial legal support that helped strengthen their contracts and protect their brand.

Emma looks forward to continuing her connection with the clinic by volunteering pro bono hours and mentoring future student attorneys.
