Hirschler is pleased to announce the addition of four associate attorneys to its Richmond office: Scott Miller and Marieke van Rijn join the firm’s commercial real estate practice; Evan Reid joins the general corporate practice; and Matthew Sarfan joins the labor and employment practice.

Scott Miller

Scott Miller focuses his practice on commercial real estate. He advises owners, developers and other industry participants on commercial real estate transactions. Miller’s practice also consists of assisting clients on various land use and zoning matters.

Miller joins after serving as a summer associate with the firm in 2020 and as an intern throughout his undergraduate career. Miller previously served as an extern for the Honorable Judge Hoppe in the United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia and as a law clerk at the Fredericksburg City Attorney's office.

Miller earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia and his law degree from the Washington and Lee University School of Law.

Evan Reid

Evan Reid advises clients on a wide range of corporate and transactional matters, including entity formation, contract negotiation, strategic partnerships and mergers and acquisitions.

Reid joins after serving as a summer associate with the firm in 2020. During law school, he served as an honors intern with the Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) Office of General counsel in Washington, D.C. He also served as a judicial intern for the Honorable Judge Richardson in the Superior Court of Fulton County in Atlanta. He also has experience as a real estate title examiner and as a paralegal with a Richmond-based firm.

Reid earned his undergraduate degree from Radford University and his law degree from the Washington and Lee University School of Law.

Marieke van Rijn

Marieke van Rijn focuses her practice on commercial real estate and business transactions. She has deep experience reviewing, drafting and negotiating leases, purchase and sale agreements, easement agreements, title and survey. She also has extensive knowledge pertaining to solar development transactions. Van Rijn also advises industry clients on corporate matters, including entity formation and asset and stock purchases.

Prior to joining Hirschler, van Rijn was an associate with Spotts Fain, PC in Richmond, and she has held fellowship roles with multiple local non-profit organizations. She served as an extern for the Honorable Judge Jenkins in the Richmond Circuit Court and as a legal intern with the office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney in New Kent County, Va.

van Rijn is active with the Richmond Bar Association, serving on the executive committee of the Real Estate Section. In the community, she serves on the junior board for Housing Families First.

She earned her undergraduate degree from George Mason University and her law degree from the University of Richmond School of Law.

Matthew Sarfan

Matthew Sarfan advises clients on a wide range of employment issues, including leave, discrimination prevention and wage and hour regulations. He is experienced handling investigative matters with administrative agencies, such as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration, as well as drafting and negotiating employee separation agreements and handbooks, representing employers in Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) collective actions related to employee misclassification, handling wrongful termination suits and advising on day-to-day employment considerations.

Prior to joining Hirschler, Sarfan practiced as an associate with Willcox & Savage, P.C. in Norfolk, Va.

He earned his undergraduate degree from James Madison University and his law degree from the William & Mary School of Law.
